Spiritual Quotes on Desires
- It is always death that comes before your
desires are fulfilled. Even if you live for a
thousand years your desires are not going to be
fulfilled. - Osho
- Most of us desire some kind of power; it may
be over the son, or the wife or the husband; or,
it may be over a group of people; or it may be
in the name of an ideal or in the name of a
country. This power, this desire to have power
over others, is always operating - even over a
servant, to order him about, to get angry with
him, to push him around. Does not this desire
for power spring from a sense of loneliness? -
Jiddu Krishnamurti
- The intellect of most persons is harnessed
by innumerable wants. Such a life is, from the
spiritual point of view the lowest type of human
existence. The highest type of human existence
is free from all wants; and it is characterised
by sufficiency or contentment. - Meher Baba
- Desire never crosses the path
Of virtuous and wakeful men. - Buddha
- If a desire can be got rid of by satisfying
it, there will be no harm in satisfying such a
desire. But desires generally are not eradicated
by satisfaction. Trying to root them out that
way is like trying to quench a fire by pouring
inflammable spirits on it. At the same time, the
proper remedy is not forcible suppression, since
such repression is bound to react sooner or
later into a forceful surging up of desires with
undesirable consequences. The proper way to get
rid of a desire is to find out `Who gets the
desire? What is its source?' When this is found,
the desire is rooted out and it will never again
emerge or grow. - Ramana Maharshi
- Knowing that all this is an illusion,
one becomes free from desire,
pure receptivity and at peace,
as if nothing existed. - Astavakra Gita
- The moment all your outer seeking stops, the
moment you have understood the futility of
desire, the futility of ambition... In that
state of non-ambitiousness, desirelessness,
truth is revealed. - Osho
- Small desires such as the desire to eat,
drink, sleep and attend to calls of nature,
though these may also be classed among desires,
you can safely satisfy. They will not implant
vasanas in your mind, necessitating further
birth. Those activities are just necessary to
carry on life and are not likely to develop or
leave behind vasanas or tendencies. As a general
rule, therefore, there is no harm in satisfying
a desire where the satisfaction will not lead to
further desires by creating vasanas in the mind.
- Ramana Maharshi
- Mind means discontent; it is its very
nature. Desires are only manifestations of this
discontent. When you watch your desires you
slowly slowly become aware of the futility of
desiring, you become aware of the absurd nature
of desiring. You become aware that by their very
nature desires are unfulfillable. Seeing this, a
transformation happens, a miracle happens, a
radical change sets in; but by seeing this --
not by repression, not by control but by
understanding. - Osho
- Renunciation of desires does not mean
asceticism or a negative attitude to life. . .
Without avoiding contact with the different
aspects of life, maintain complete detachment in
the midst of intense activity. - Meher Baba
